Filtration : From a design standpoint every air conditioning system incorporates some type of filter primarily  to protect the evaporator coil from clogging.  A  basic fiberglass filter is designed to keep equipment functionable, it is not designed to clean the air you breathe. Heavy pleated filters are designed specifically to clean the air of undersirables, but they reduce system efficiency by slowing air flow too much. However, the Respicaire Electronic Air Filter addresses both air quality and system efficiency as shown on the graph below. To help interpret the graph I have provided information about how filters are rated.

    1. Filtration : The level of filtration is expressed as a Merv value from 1 - 16 (16 being best filtration). If you have respiratory health concerns and / or allergies using a filter rated less than 8 on the Merv scale is not recommended.

     2. Resistance (inches of wg) created by the filter in the ducting system : System performance (seer) is directly related to the amount of air flow generated by the blower fan. The blower fan has a finite amount of velocity it can produce; which is linked directly to the accessibility of return air being pulled through the filter. A clogged or high resistance filter seriously hinders system performance. Imagine a 5 gallon pump using a 3 gallon hose to draw water out of a reservoir. Despite the pumps ability to transfer 5 gallons of water it can never exceed 3 gallons. Resistance to return air being drawn through the filter is expressed in inches of wg. A low wg number means low resistance. Low resistance means higher air flow (greater efficiency).

    By installing the Respicaire system and a Braeburn 3000 Thermostat together you receive high-end air filtration and a thermostat that cycles the recirculating fan 10 minutes every hour. If this was not the case there are many times during the year when you would not get the benefits of the filter because the heating / cooling unit was not being operated frequently enough.
